The town of around 10,000 inhabitants is located in the north of the Altenburger Land district and borders Saxony-Anhalt. Meuselwitz was first mentioned in a document in 1139 and has been a town since 1874. Weaving developed in Meuselwitz around 1600. The industrial production of fabrics began here in 1834 with the founding of the first large textile company. A significant turning point in the history of the town was the start of lignite mining in 1840. Initially, the coal was only mined in open-cast mines. From 1876, mechanical engineering also developed, which was a major economic factor alongside weaving, the semiconductor industry, rubber goods production and mining until 1990. Today, Meuselwitz is home to industries such as mechanical engineering, iron foundries, computer technology, textiles and rubber production. There are also craft and service businesses.

The landscape, once scarred by lignite mining and now recultivated, is home to lakes and forests that can be explored on foot or by bike. The Hainbergsee lake on the outskirts of the city is particularly inviting for relaxing and sporting activities. The town's sights include the neo-Gothic town hall, the reconstructed local history museum and St. Martin's Church. The orangery in von Seckendorff Park was built between 1724 and 1727. This is now the town's landmark and is said to have been the inspiration for the construction of Sanssouci Palace. The "coal railroad", which runs on part of the former mine railroad network, is a tourist attraction that keeps the memory of lignite mining alive. The town's sporting and cultural attraction is the Schnaudertalhalle, which can accommodate up to 1,150 spectators. In addition, the "Am Penkwitzer Weg" stadium provides excellent conditions for school and club sports for footballers and track and field athletes. There is also a tennis court. The redesigned "bluechip-Arena" is home to the ZFC Meuselwitz soccer team and offers 1,064 seats and 2,900 standing places.
