Medieval mikvah in Erfurt
Medieval mikvah in Erfurt
Alongside the synagogue and cemetery, the mikvah is one of the most important facilities of a Jewish community. The medieval mikvah, first mentioned in 1248/49, is located directly behind the Krämerbrücke bridge on the Gera river. Archaeologists rediscovered it in 2007. According to the regulations, the ritual bath was supplied with „living“ water, i.e. groundwater. Men visited the bath before major holidays, women after childbirth and menstruation. The basin of this medieval bath in Erfurt, which has not been used for centuries, can be viewed from outside at any time via a window in the ceiling of the protective building. However, the mikvah can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
