The Mönchpfiffel district of the municipality of Mönchpfiffel-Nikolausrieth is located on the border between Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The small village was first mentioned in documents as early as the 9th century. The village is home to a historic monastery estate, which was once founded as a branch of Walkenried Monastery. Even today, the medieval monastery has remained almost unchanged in its historical layout. Over the course of around eight centuries, it has developed into a large agricultural business. The monastery's farm store sells its own produce and much more. In the former oxen stable, visitors can enjoy regional specialties in a restaurant. Couples can get married in the historic monastery chapel from the 13th century.
