Mill ferry at the Hohenwarte reservoir
Mill ferry at the Hohenwarte reservoir
A special feature on the „Thuringian Sea“ is the only car ferry in Germany that operates on a reservoir: the so-called mill ferry operated by the municipal public transport company (KomBus GmbH) is the most convenient and fastest connection between the Altenroth and Linkenmühle landing stages on the idyllic Hohenwarte reservoir. Due to the special landscape of the deeply incised Saale valley and the size of the Hohenwarte reservoir with a length of approx. 27 kilometers, the dam wall is not sufficient as a connection. The mill ferry can be used to ferry cars, people, motorcycles, bicycles and camper vans. The crossing of the 400 meter wide waterway only takes about 5 minutes. This saves a journey of 33 km and is a lot of fun at the same time.
