Museum in Elisabethenburg Castle
Museum in Elisabethenburg Castle
From 1682 to 1692, Duke Bernhard I had Elisabethenburg Castle built on the site of the Meiningen town castle. The main entrance to the castle leads through a rotunda into the courtyard of honor of the baroque three-winged building complex. In the lovingly landscaped courtyard, surrounded on all sides by the stately castle façade, visitors imagine themselves to be in another world. Repeated structural changes have given the imposing castle complex its current appearance. Architectural highlights include the castle church and the Hessensaal. The impressive final chord of the ducal building activities is the neo-classical Marble Hall from 1907. On a tour of the palace, visitors can expect to see around 50 exhibition rooms. The middle floor of the palace is primarily reserved for the art collections. Stucco work, textile wall coverings and magnificent tiled stoves tell of former courtly splendor. Two rooms commemorate Princess Adelheid of Meiningen, who ascended the English throne as Queen Adelaide alongside her husband William IV in 1830. Children, young people and adults can experience cultural history to touch, look at and listen to in the exhibition "Meiningen - Court of the Muses between Weimar and Bayreuth" in the ducal residential suite.
