Rauenstein New Castle Museum
In addition to the exhibition on the Bleßberg Cave and the Schildkröt dolls, the Neues Schloss Rauenstein Museum houses an exquisite and representative collection of Rauenstein porcelain:
Founded in 1783 as one of the oldest Thuringian manufactories, the Rauenstein porcelain factory produced everyday porcelain as well as exquisite pieces, porcelain figurines and porcelain heads for dolls until 1930. The most famous designs include the straw and onion pattern, the Delft pattern and the Rauenstein bird motif. Until its demise, the Rauenstein Castle was used for production as Part I of the Rauenstein porcelain factory.
The Schildkröt doll company, whose history dates back to 1896, is one of the oldest doll manufacturers in the world and has been producing artfully crafted toy and collectible dolls and soft toys in Rauenstein since 1993. The company museum with numerous exhibits from over a hundred years of company history will be on display in Rauenstein Castle from 2016.
The Bleßberg Cave exhibition is dedicated to the most spectacular geological discovery of recent years. In 2008, the Bleßberg Cave was discovered during construction work for an ICE tunnel near Rauenstein, which crosses the cave in a north-south direction. Dedicated geologists only had a few weeks to investigate the cave as part of a rapid exploration. Impressive exhibits from one of the largest dripstone caves in Thuringia can now be admired in Rauenstein Castle. Of course, geological explanations are not neglected either.
The Rauenstein collections are rounded off by linking all the exhibition sections: from the history of the earth at the exciting intersection of the Thuringian Slate Mountains and the Schalkau shell limestone plateau to the raw materials and resources for porcelain production and the typical regional toy manufacture.
