Museum Rennsteig and Mee(h)r
The Rennsteig and Mee(h)r Museum is located in the Blankenstein district, at the entrance to the Rosenthal pulp and paper mill. The museum is dedicated to a wide range of historical topics. Visitors can learn about the development of the region from the Middle Ages to the present day. The main focus is on the history of the municipality, industrial history and the division of Germany, which are inextricably linked. The museum building itself is a historical artifact. Not only is it located at the entrance to the paper mill, but it is one of only three buildings from the time the mill was built that still exist today. The other two buildings of this type are the villa of factory founder Gotthelf Anton Wiede and the old locksmith's shop on the factory premises. This makes the museum building itself a witness to the historical development of the site. A fact that can also be seen in the changing functions of the building over the years. Originally built around 1910 as a paper warehouse, it became Blankenstein's post office and gatehouse until 1926. After the war, its use changed to a residential building and until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the building also housed a law firm. Most recently, a single, unrenovated room served as a small company museum.
