Glücksburg Castle Museum
The town of Römhild is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Gleichberge mountains. Next to the church, Glücksburg Castle dominates the town's skyline. The
500-year-old castle, formerly the residence of the Henneberg counts of the Römhild line and Duke Heinrich of Saxony-Römhild, encloses
two inner courtyards. The museum has been located in the rear part of the castle complex since 1979. The designed
garden with its large ceramics and the
International Ceramics" exhibition is dedicated to contemporary ceramics. In an impressive show, 173 artists from 34 countries present their unique pieces, which were created during
international ceramics symposia held in Römhild from 1975 to 1993. After a 15-year break, this major
tradition and successfully organized further international ceramics symposia in 2008, 2011 and 2015. Museum Schloss Glücksburg, with its collection of 20th and 21st century ceramics, is therefore an important location for international contemporary ceramics.
The restored
The ballroom with its beautiful carvings is used as a
Gallery, for special exhibitions, concerts and readings. The history of the town's castle and outstanding personalities are just as much a part of the exhibition program as a
impressive toy exhibition with doll's houses, doll's carriages, stores including wooden toys from great-grandmother's time. The
The collection of the Greek Mavrogordato family includes pieces from Roman and Greek antiquity as well as impressive artists and character dolls from the first half of the 20th century. Equally impressive is the "
Hönn'sche Sammlung", the
Tools for rural crafts and the
agriculture of the region, which can also be admired in the former ducal stables.
Schloss Glücksburg is the venue for the Thuringian ceramics market in Römhild every year on the 3rd weekend in August.
