Museum Wasserburg Kapellendorf
Museum Wasserburg Kapellendorf
Changing history
It was mortgaged by impoverished castle lords, for the city of Erfurt it was an important part of its castle policy, for a robber baron it was a safe hiding place and the Saxons used it as a judicial and rent office. In the 14th century, the castle took on its present form with a curtain wall, moat and medieval residential tower. Today, Kapellendorf is one of the best-preserved castles in Thuringia.
A place for art and culture since 1950
The history of Kapellendorf moated castle is as exciting as it is eventful. The museum in the castle's medieval bower tells the story of the complex. Special exhibitions are also on display. The castle courtyard provides an authentic backdrop for annual markets and music events, as well as open-air theater for short plays and cabaret.
