Leitenteiche recreation area

The Leitenteiche recreation area belongs to the town of Tanna, which is located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains Upper Saale Nature Park.

In 1963, the people of Tanna decided on their own initiative to turn a meadow into a local recreation area in order to open up the region's attractive nature to the developing tourism industry. In just 4 years, eager residents created three large bathing ponds. However, due to its proximity to the German-German border, the recreation area and the hiking trails were not open to the public until the mid-1970s. Today, the Leitenteiche recreation area is a popular place to relax, with a newly built entrance for swimming in summer and idyllic peace and quiet the rest of the year. The proximity to the border and the associated low level of tourism development in the region also had positive effects. As a result, a beautiful landscape has been preserved around Tanna that captivates hikers and those seeking relaxation. Hiking is very important in and around Tanna. Tanna is home to the current hiking world champion and Guinness world record holder Thomas Müller. His record in continuous Nordic walking of 67 hours and 308 km, for example, was achieved in 2008 on the well-developed and signposted "Tannaer Rundwanderweg" and the "Saale-Orla-Wanderweg". All regions of Tanna and its districts can be easily reached via these trails. You can live out your "wanderlust" in a charming environment and learn interesting facts about our region or simply enjoy the beautiful nature.
