"Even as a child, I roamed the forests of Rastenberg, climbed trees and nibbled on flowers, plants and fruit. I knew many of the trees that are now of stately size when I was a little plant. Whenever I could, I visited my grandmother at her work as a forest warden. There were always bottles and jars of mysterious tinctures in her kitchen window at home, promising relief for minor aches and pains and illnesses.
