New local court

The New local court at Bahnhofstraße 59 was built between 1905 and 1907 as a district court according to plans by the then Royal Prussian State Planning Officer Alfred Brzozowski and is regarded as the architectural twin of the Bad Langensalza district court.

The building was both a court and a prison. The courtroom was located behind the three high windows in the southern gable. In the annex to the magnificent main building, the prison wing was attached to the inner courtyard surrounded by high walls. Prisoners who were awaiting trial were housed here.

The stately building complex in the form of the German Renaissance has had a varied history since its construction. Used as a district court until 1940, the building also housed the official apartments, including those of the district judge. From the fall of 1949, the building was used as a hospital with a maternity ward, laboratory and X-ray department for the local population. Complicated ownership of the former Reich building and the land made further use difficult. As a result, the hospital was closed in the 1970s and converted into a municipal outpatient clinic.

After the building became public property, three doctors and a dentist practiced there. With the demise of the GDR's state healthcare system on December 31, 1990, the town of Bad Tennstedt took over responsibility for the building. No suitable public use could be found for this prestigious building. After a short period of municipal rental, the town council decided to put the building up for sale. The building complex has been privately owned since 1999. A couple from Hesse bought the house from the Treuhand. In conjunction with the Lower Monument Authority of the Unstrut-Hainich district, the couple painstakingly renovated and restored the building over a period of twelve years.

Today, the building houses barrier-free rental apartments of modern standards. The New District Court continues to dominate the image of our city as a representative building.
