Neuhaus am Rennweg is the largest town on the Rennsteig and a tourist hiking center in the middle of the charming landscape of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park on the border to the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Germany's most famous high-altitude hiking trail, the Rennsteig, runs 3 km through the town and until the last century was also the border between two principalities and duchies. The town rightly advertises itself with the tourist slogan "Neuhaus am Rennweg - where the Rennsteig is called Rennweg", as Neuhaus has had the postal name Neuhaus am Rennweg since 1866 to avoid any confusion with the Rennsteig municipality of Neustadt am Rennsteig.
Extensive, still intact forests surround the town with its extensive network of circular hiking trails. With its magnificent views over the Thuringian mountains, Neuhaus is the starting point for many hikes, excursion destinations and sights. Due to its altitude, Neuhaus is also a winter sports center, with cross-country skiing enthusiasts in particular making their tracks in the crystal-clear winter air. A cultural gem is the town church, one of the largest and most beautiful wooden churches in Thuringia, as well as the "Geißlerhaus" local history museum at Sonneberger Straße 106.
Major sporting events include the annual GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf in May and the international sled dog races in January. Numerous club festivals and church concerts enrich the town's cultural life. The summer season ends with the Neuhäuser Kirchweihe on the last weekend in August and the Marktschreierfest in September. Every year during the Advent season, on the 2nd and 3rd Advent weekends, a festively decorated market square and the adjacent pedestrian zone shine in festive splendor and invite you to the Bergweihnacht. In June 2007, Neuhaus am Rennweg celebrated the 400th anniversary of its founding.
