The municipality Obermehler lies gracefully at the foot of the magnificent beech forest of the Volkenroda ridgessurrounded by numerous orchards, from which the red tiled roofs and the red church tower barely stand out. Three villages belong to the municipality. These are Obermehler, Großmehlra and Pöthen.

The oldest known settlers were Celts. The first documented mention of the village dates back to 997, when Emperor Otto III donated the village of Mehlre to the Victorian monastery in Mainz.

The Museum of local history and technology in the municipality has gained supra-regional significance due to the huge collection of exhibits. The members of the Heimatverein Mehle e.V. and the Verein für Stationärmotoren, Traktoren und historische Landmaschinen Großmehlra have set themselves the goal of preserving the history of the village and everyday life in the past for posterity and presenting the past in a comprehensible way during guided tours and workshops.

In the meantime, the airfield Obermehler-Schlotheim airfield The former military airfield in Schlotheim is of great economic importance for the agricultural town. Sightseeing flights can be booked there and various events are held on the site.

Worth seeing in the neighboring community is the Volkenroda Monastery. Built on the remains of a former imperial castle by the Cistercian order and consecrated in the 12th century, the monastery is considered a gem in the heart of Germany since its revival in 1990. But it's not just the old that can be admired here: thanks to the Christ Pavilion a fascinating ensemble of old and new has been created. The Christ Pavilion, one of the most visited pavilions at the "Expo 2000" world exhibition in Hanover, blends in perfectly with the monastery complex.
