Oberwirbach is the highest situated district of Bad Blankenburg and was incorporated in 1993.

Oberwirbach has a Romanesque village church from the 13th century that is well worth seeing. There used to be several quarries in the area where blanks for slate stylus production were extracted. Hikers can follow idyllic forest paths from the tranquil village down into the gorge-like side valleys of the Schwarzatal.
