One of the most beautiful excursion destinations for families in Nordhausen is the Petersberggarten with a fantastic view of the city. The park was completely redesigned in 2004 as part of the 2nd Thuringian State Garden Show. Centrally located in the heart of the almost 1100-year-old town of Nordhausen, the local recreation area offers many opportunities to relax, walk and play. The terraced Petersberggarten runs along the historic medieval town wall. In the middle of the Petersberg stands the 62-metre-high Petri Tower, one of the striking church towers that characterize the silhouette of the Rolandstadt. The tower of the former St. Peter's Church was built in the 14th century. The church itself was destroyed in the Second World War, but the Petri Tower is still one of Nordhausen's landmarks that can be seen from afar. The key to the tower can be borrowed from the town information office. The former state horticultural show grounds with their many play and leisure facilities make children's hearts beat faster. Water games at the Petri Tower, a large playground for climbing, swinging and sliding, a basketball court and a small soccer pitch are just some of the facilities for young visitors to the Petersberg. The large skating facility with elements such as a half-pipe, bench, bowl, pyramids and smaller and larger edges is also popular. The brave ones dare to climb the 20-metre-high climbing tower with various levels of difficulty. From April to October (summer vacations excluded), you can take part in supervised climbing on Fridays from 2 to 7 pm. The Petersberg in Nordhausen is therefore a popular and easily accessible excursion destination for all generations. The Petersberggarten is easily accessible by streetcar and, thanks to its central location right in the city center, can also be easily reached on foot. The area is also regularly used for events, such as the annual Roland Festival in summer.
