Stake house
Stake house
The pile house at the house pond in Plothen in the "Land of a Thousand Ponds", also known as the "Sky Ponds around Plothen". There is a wooden house built on 90 stilts in the house pond, which has been set up as a museum. The 75 km² area with its former 2,000 ponds (now around 600) was created by monks in the 11th/12th century for the purpose of fish farming. They are connected by a system of ditches and are fed solely by rainfall, hence the name "Himmelsteiche". At this altitude, such a historically evolved pond landscape is unique.
