The Thuringian Ascot ...
The former racecourse of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is located in the heart of Thuringia. A fantastic view of the royal seat of Gotha with Friedenstein Castle and the Thuringian Forest make the natural course a popular local recreation area.
The magnificent Victorian-style grandstand has witnessed many great horse races and adds to the charm of the facility. The Boxberg is one of the longest flat racecourses in Germany.
Race days on the Boxberg are unforgettable moments in which the past touches the present.
History: Horse races have been held on the site, which was originally a parade ground, since 1842. With the support of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the Mitteldeutsche Rennverein was founded in 1878 with the aim of building a racecourse on the 80-hectare site. In the years that followed, the facility that still exists today was built with an English-style wooden grandstand.
Until 2011, gallop races with English and Arabian thoroughbreds as well as pony, riding horse and hunting races were held regularly. Two to five race days were organized each year between May and September. For financial reasons, in particular due to a lack of sponsors, no races were held in 2012 and 2013. In addition to the horse races, the area is used for festivals such as Freakstock and other events.
In the first week of August 2022, the Royal Ranger National Scout Camp took place on the race track in Boxberg, with over 16,000 people setting up camps on the track.
