Plänckner's view
Plänckner's view
Plänckner's view is the name of the viewpoint, which is popular with hikers and cyclists and, at an altitude of 970 m, lies directly at the highest point of the Rennsteig. The hiking trail to the viewpoint leads just below the summit on the south side of the Great Berber Mountain which is the highest mountain in the Thuringian Forest.
From the wooden viewing platform in the foreground Goldlauter-Heidersbach and the city Suhl on both sides of the Cathedral Hill and the Ring- and Döllberg is enclosed. On a clear day, the view extends as far as the Rhön and far in the direction of Coburg. For orientation, there is an annotated panoramic image on the platform.
The viewpoint was named after Julius Plänckner (1791-1858). He is considered the „first Rennsteig hiker“. A memorial plaque on the viewing platform commemorates the soldier and cartographer.
