Pößneck, first mentioned as a town in 1324, is located in the Orlasenke in the midst of a charming landscape: in the south the Thuringian Slate Mountains with the Saale reservoirs, in the north the red sandstone heath. Geologists will find the most important Zechstein reefs in Germany around Pößneck. The old town of Pößneck is a unique testimony to historical town architecture and is a listed building. Pößneck's market square is quite sloping - in the truest sense of the word. With its slope of 15 percent, it is one of the steepest in Thuringia. The market is framed by the late Gothic town hall and the town church. In the immediate vicinity, the freshly renovated Pößneck pedestrian zone invites visitors to linger.Pößneck has created an exemplary gem with Museum642, which opened in November 2015. The monument ensemble of three buildings steeped in history stands on the site of the former Carmelite monastery, which was founded here 700 years ago and existed until the Reformation. A few meters away is the White Tower, the only completely preserved corner tower of the former city fortifications, which is now used as a lookout tower.Pößneck's city center is visibly blossoming.
