Goldisthal pumped storage power plant
Goldisthal pumped storage power plant
The Goldisthal pumped storage plant has been in operation since 2004. It is located in the western Thuringian Slate Mountains on the Schwarza river.
The cavern power plant has an installed capacity of 1060 megawatts (MW). It is still one of the largest and most modern power plants of its kind in Europe.
The upper reservoir has a capacity of 13 million cubic meters of working water, enough for around nine hours of turbine full-load operation. The power plant needs around 100 seconds from standstill to full output (1060 MW). This rapid availability makes it an important component of the energy transition, as it can react quickly to the strongly fluctuating feed-in of renewable energies. Pumped storage plants are a guarantee for grid stability.
