In 2014, the Rennsteighaus was ceremoniously inaugurated in the Haus am Hohen Stock.

In the Rennsteighaus, guests and residents can use sanitary facilities such as toilets and showers, store sports equipment and find repair and rest facilities. There are also facilities for ski waxing.

The special feature of the Schmiedefeld Rennsteighaus is the multifunctional and communal use of the building. In addition to the Rennsteighaus on the first floor of the "Haus am Hohen Stein" building in Schmiedefeld, it is also home to the tourist information office and the information center of the UNESCO Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve.
