Altenburg Residential Palace with palace and playing card museum
The residential castle with the castle and playing card museum is enthroned on a porphyry rock. From the former palace of the Hohenstaufen Emperor Barbarossa, the castle developed into the residence of the Wettin princes. The castle museum houses valuable collections of East Asian porcelain by Bernhard August von Lindenau, the armory collection, the Sibyl Cabinet, a clock collection and the playing card collection, which invites visitors to join in with the interactive card-making workshop. The magnificent banqueting halls and ducal chambers from the 17th to 20th centuries are also worth a visit. The impressive palace church holds another treasure in the form of the Trost organ, which Johann Sebastian Bach once played.
