Knights' Chapel in Altenstein Castle Park
Knights' Chapel in Altenstein Castle Park
Behind Altenstein Castle, there is a rock on which you can climb via paths and stairs. The crowning glory at the top is a neo-Gothic knight's chapel. It is clearly visible from various directions, attracting hikers from afar. Since time immemorial, there have often been consecrated places on mountains. This chapel is also a symbol of a temple of virtue on the mountain. The path to the top is a path to virtue and stands for the path of life and the goal of human life. In addition, individual members of the ducal family were at times active in the Freemasons. This community also frequently used the motif of the temple on the mountain. There is a cave at the foot of the rock. Here, the seeker of wisdom opens up knowledge of nature that is hidden in the earth. When he later leaves the cave, he heads upwards to the chapel. The path forks on the first step. This fork represents the fact that the path of life does not always follow a straight line. However, the seeker must decide how to continue, because only one path leads to the right destination! When he reaches his destination, he stands in front of the knight's chapel, which stands for medieval virtues such as orthodoxy and chivalry. At the same time, the builder Duke Georg I also associated it with Freemasonry, which he himself practiced as a young man. Chivalry also played an important role for the Freemasons. In addition, the chapel - like the Boniface Rock - is an expression of the romantic enthusiasm for the Middle Ages that prevailed in the 19th century.
