The square takes its name from the deserted village of Ritzenhausen in the valley.

Numerous forest roads converge on this site from all sides. This was a central point for storing and loading the timber felled in the surrounding area.

The Ritzhäuser loading point can be found from Eigenrieden at kilometer 8.5 and from Behringen at kilometer 22.8.
