Red Tower Weimar (near Belvedere Palace)
Red Tower Weimar (near Belvedere Palace)
The Red Tower is located in the south-eastern part of Belvedere Park. Its predecessor stood in the garden of the Wittum Palace until 1820 and served as a tea room. At Anna Amalia's request, the tower was decorated with chinoiserie on the foundations of the former city fortifications. After the death of the Duchess, the pavilion was moved from its location on Theaterplatz to Belvedere under the supervision of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe and Carl August devoted themselves to their scientific studies here - there was also a small botanical library. Court society events were held there regularly.
