Red moor

The Red Moor is the second largest raised bog in the Rhön. As the core zone of the biosphere reserve, the actual moor has an area of 103 ha; the entire nature reserve even has an area of 315 ha.

The Red Moor is a popular excursion destination for nature explorers, hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. Starting from the NABU house at the Red Moor, a low-barrier boardwalk with an observation tower and the 10 km long Rhön Moordorf circular trail offer very special nature experiences and impressions of this habitat.

The Red Moor is also located on the two premium hiking trails "THE HOCHRHÖNER" and Extra tour "Red Moor".

In winter, the numerous cross-country ski trails attract cross-country skiers to the Rote Moor.

The formation of the moor began after the last ice age around 12,000 years ago. High levels of precipitation of over 900 millimetres per year encouraged peat growth, allowing an initial fen to develop into a raised bog over the millennia.

However, due to 175 years of peat extraction for the surrounding Rhön health resorts, the raised bog was severely damaged until the 1980s. Only the peripheral areas remained largely undisturbed and today offer an exciting insight into the flora and fauna of a raised bog.

Extensive renaturation measures began in 1979, which succeeded in preventing further drainage of the moors.

The vegetation in the remaining raised bog is characterized by peat mosses such as the red Magellan's peat moss, the spear peat moss and the round-leaved sundew. Carnivorous plants in particular, such as the sundew, are very special species that can only be found here in the moor. On the edge of the moor, almost mystical-looking Carpathian birch forests with undergrowths of heather, bilberry and bilberry grow in foggy weather.

The adjoining fen zone is characterized by small sedge meadows, wet meadows and mat-grass meadows. The endangered cranberry, crowberry and purple moor grass also grow here. The fauna of the Red Moor includes over 36 species of mammals, including absolute rarities: marsh and alpine shrews, pine martens and six species of bat. The native birdlife includes the black grouse, which has unfortunately become very rare, and the woodcock. In total, over 120 bird species can be found here.
