The castle was built to protect the Saale valley and because of the old traffic routes running here. Franz Kugler wrote the famous song "An der Saale hellem Strande..." on the Rudelsburg in 1826. At the end of its eventful history, the castle was burned down. Only the two hill forts have been preserved.
Today there is a restaurant here and visitors have a magnificent view over the Saale valley.
