Ruin Auersburg

The ruins of Auersburg Castle are located just a few kilometers north of Hilders on the southern slope of the Auersberg, which is over 750 m high. It was probably built around or after 1350 as the seat of a small bishop's office in Würzburg. In keeping with this purpose, the castle is designed as a towerless ring wall complex with internal buildings. It later also served as a quarry - the stones were used to build the church in Hilders, among other things.

HessenForst extensively restored the ruins in 2008. Today, the Auersburg is a popular excursion destination for hikers and those seeking relaxation. The viewing tower offers a wonderful panoramic view of the Wasserkuppe, Milseburg and the Scheppenbach and Ulster valleys. But it's not just day-trippers who have appreciated the castle for years; various species of bats have also adopted the ruins as a summer and winter roost. For this reason, the cellar has been fitted with a protective grid and numerous bat boxes have been hung on the walls and in the surrounding area.
