Round castle Oberpöllnitz
Round castle Oberpöllnitz
The round castle is located in Oberpöllnitz in eastern Thuringia and is one of only a few round castles in the world. It was first mentioned in documents in 1341 as a round building with a small courtyard and owes its name to this unusual, almost circular layout. It was Bernhard von Pöllnitz who converted the castle into a prestigious Renaissance palace. On the upper floor facing south-southeast was the Knights' Hall, which was modernized for representative purposes around 1730 by the new owner of the manor, Julius von Jobin. Today, this hall has been renovated and is open to the public for hire. On entering the castle, you enter the foyer with a wooden staircase and can look through an arched portal into the inner courtyard. There are two stair towers in the inner courtyard, which provide access to the individual floors. The large stair tower has an octagonal shape and offers a magnificent view over the surrounding countryside.
