Salzburg Bad Neustadt
Salzburg Bad Neustadt
High above Bad Neustadt towers the multi-towered Salzburg, one of the largest castle complexes in Germany and a real gem of high and late medieval secular architecture in Central Europe. Founded in the middle of the 12th century, it mainly took on its present form between 1170 and 1250, when the Bishop of Würzburg appointed at least six officials - including a bailiff and mayor. These so-called Ganerben built their own small castles within the extensive fortifications. From the 14th century onwards, only minor building and repair work was carried out. Today, the Voitsche Ansitz is inhabited by its owner, Baron von und zu Guttenberg.
The Salzburg covers an area of 10,700 m². It is bordered by a 450 m long circular wall, which is covered by buildings within the walls and partially crowned with battlements.
The inner courtyard to the Italian restaurant "O Sole Mio" and the Bonifazius Chapel are freely accessible to visitors. The castle complex itself is not open to the public. Guided tours of Salzburg take place in summer. Registration and participation is via Tourismus und Stadtmarketing Bad Neustadt GmbH.
