The church is probably well over 900 years old. Despite several renovations, its beauty has been preserved. Concerts are held here twice a year. A narrow stained glass window depicting the patron saint of the church, Nicholas of Myra, has been on display in the Eisenach Museum of Ecclesiastical Art since 1900. It was created around 1170 and is one of the oldest German stained glass windows.

The Nikolaikirche is one of the best-preserved Romanesque churches in Thuringia. In the 13th century, it was most likely used as a castle chapel by the nearby Kevernburg.
