Schillingstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1227 as "Silgenstadt". Throughout its history, the village has belonged to various manors. Situated on the Schmücke and Finne mountain ranges, the wooden trestle windmill, built in 1840 and last restored in 1992, towers at the highest point on the eastern edge of the village. The mill festival takes place here every year on Whit Monday on German Mill Day, which is jointly organized by the local associations and attracts many visitors.

Another striking building in Schillingstedt is St. Andrew's Church. The Romanesque arch between the chancel and the church is the only reminder of the original Romanesque architectural style of the church, which was consecrated in 1498 and has undergone numerous alterations.

Local life, including events such as the traditional bonfire at Easter and choir concerts, is shaped by the Traktorfreunde, the Singgemeinschaft, the Carnevalsverein and the fire department.

With its incorporation in 2018, Schillingstedt is the youngest district in Sömmerda.
