The village is located around eight kilometers south of Bad Lobenstein. The southern border of the municipality forms the state border between Thuringia and Bavaria.
The 169.3 km (historical length) of the Schlegel route passes through Schlegel. "Rennsteig"one of the most famous and important European long-distance hiking trails, which was rerouted at Kulmberg, away from the busy road. Here, as everywhere else in the region, visitors can enjoy the romance of discovering largely untouched nature.

Historical:

Schlegel was first mentioned in documents on June 24, 1254 and Seibis in 1500.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community of Seibis became a district of Schlegel.

On January 1, 2019, the municipalities of Schlegel, Blankenberg, Blankenstein, Harra, Neundorf, Birkenhügel and Pottiga merged to form the Municipality of Rosenthal am Rennsteig together. All of the municipalities in this merger had belonged to the Saale-Rennsteig administrative community since 1994[.
