Berka Castle before the Hainich
Berka Castle before the Hainich
The castle with pond and park, which was built around 1800, is surrounded by lawned park areas and a pond at the front. It is a simple half-timbered building with an entrance hall of Ionic columns. On the upper floor there is a banqueting hall with rococo-style stucco ornamentation on the ceiling and an oven niche from the middle of the 18th century. The roots of the castle building go far back into medieval times and history tells of a castle building. The first documentary references date back to the 12th century. Today, the pond, the strong foundation walls of the manor house and the remains of the artificial moat are reminders of the former moated castle. Like everywhere else, the Thirty Years' War left terrible devastation in its wake and the castle burned down completely in 1650. Friedrich Albert von Creuzburg and his entourage succeeded in rebuilding the castle as a farmstead rather than a fortress. In the late 18th century, structural changes were made to the manor house. The main façade was redesigned in the spirit of classicism: strictly structured forms and a columned hall at the entrance portal, crowned by an antique-style pediment
