Reinhardsbrunn Castle
Reinhardsbrunn Castle
On the outskirts of Friedrichroda, in a charming landscape parkthat is neo-Gothic castle Reinhardsbrunn. Between 1827-1835 was the Hunting lodge The magnificent building designed by the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on the foundation walls of the former Benedictine monastery Reinhardsbrunn was built. It was founded in 1085 by Ludwig the Springer, was regarded as the spiritual center of Thuringia in the 13th century and was the house monastery and burial place of the Ludovingians, a ruling dynasty in medieval Thuringia and Hesse. There is also an ancestral gallery of the Ludovingians in the castle's banqueting hall.
From the story: According to legend, Louis the Knight murdered Count Palatine Frederick III in order to gain possession of the Palatinate of Saxony. After almost three years in captivity, he successfully escaped his earthly punishment at the hands of the executioner by jumping from Giebichenstein Castle (Halle/Saale), an event that earned him his nickname. Branded inwardly by sin, he had the Ulrichkirche built in Sangerhausen. The famous Wartburg Castle is also said to be his creation. Above all, however, he founded Reinhardsbrunn Monastery, the family monastery of the Ludovingians.
The castle itself is (still) closed to visitors. The state, district, municipality and private initiatives are working to preserve and reuse the unique complex.
Park tours guided tours of the park take place every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. from April 1 to October 29. On public holidays only if the holiday falls on a guided tour day.
