Ronneburg Castle
Ronneburg Castle
The historic castle complex of Ronneburg is enthroned on a rocky outcrop above the Gessental valley.
Around 900, a small defensive structure was built on the site of the rear castle. In the second half of the 12th century, it was expanded into a castle complex by the bailiffs of Weida. Ownership changed very frequently in the following period. From 1826 to 1918, the town and castle of Ronneburg belonged to the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg.
The most historically valuable part is the so-called Knights' Hall. Extensive renovation work on the Knights' Hall began in 1991. The castle courtyard and the open areas of the castle complex, as well as other parts of the building fabric, were gradually subjected to a thorough renovation until 2007. Since then, the castle complex has been a popular destination for those seeking relaxation. The town and school museum, the youth club and the castle gardens are now popular leisure areas.
The Ronneburg Town and School Museum has an extensive collection of museum objects, which are gradually being restored due to the extensive renovation work in the castle complex. Since 2006, the Ronneburg Heimatverein e.V. has created new exhibition rooms in the tower building of Ronneburg Castle. „Die Bauernstube“, the historical classroom, the „bourgeois living room“ and the exhibition „Ronneburg Then and Now“ are an integral part of the museum. In recent years, „GDR history“ and the topic of „Mining in the Ronneburg mining district“ have been added. The mineral collection is currently under construction.
