Schwarzburg Castle
Schwarzburg Castle
Schwarzburg Castle rises on a mountain spur above the Schwarzatal valley. The hilltop castle served as the ancestral seat of the counts of the same name for centuries. The place became the focus of world interest in 1919 when Friedrich Ebert signed the Weimar Constitution there. The castle has lived through eventful times. Under the National Socialists, it was to be converted into a „Reichsgästeheim“. It was heavily destroyed for this purpose. Since 2009, extensive work has been underway to make the palace accessible to visitors again. An important milestone was the reopening of the armory with its unique collection of ceremonial weapons.
