Wilhelmsburg Palace Gardens
Wilhelmsburg Palace Gardens
One of the garden paradises in Schmalkalden is the garden of Wilhelmsburg Castle, which was created during the Renaissance. The park is one of the earliest terraced gardens in Germany with the remains of a once important waterworks. The terraced garden, which was created from 1602 under Landgrave Moritz von Hessen as a „pleasure, herb, kitchen and tree garden“, was redesigned in 2014 according to a historical plan. The top terrace is adorned with geometric boxwood ornaments. Ornamental plants, vegetables and herbs are presented on the two middle terraces. Rare old fruit varieties can be found on the lowest level and in the large orchard. A large stone staircase connects the terraces and leads from the pond at the foot of the castle up to Wilhelmsburg Castle. The south side of the Wilhelmsburg is reflected in the castle pond and entices visitors to discover the beauty of the halls and chambers inside.
