Wittenberg Castle Church

The castle church was built in 1506 on the foundations of the original castle of the Elector of Saxony. Martin Luther posted the famous 95 theses on the door of the castle church over 500 years ago.

"A strong fortress is our God"

This line from Martin Luther's famous psalm and hymn is emblazoned in large letters on the steeple of this impressive church. Today, Luther's grave and the final resting place of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon can be visited inside the church. The castle church has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Today, the doors of the castle church are open to visitors from all over the world every day, with the exception of church services. Today's theses door, a popular photo motif, is made of bronze and bears the 95 theses, which were probably hammered onto the original theses door at this point. There are larger-than-life statues of nine key figures of the Reformation on the wall pillars of the nave.

As part of the renovation work on the castle and castle church for the anniversary of the Reformation, the building complex houses various exhibitions, research rooms and the castle church visitor center. On the first floor, a connection was created between the visitor center and the adjacent castle church. The World Heritage Site's meeting and information center provides information about the significance of the church during the Reformation and creates space for reflection.
