The Municipality of Schmeheim near Suhl, lies in the "Kleiner Thüringer Wald" landscape conservation area. It was first mentioned in a document in 914, when an abbot from Fulda bequeathed some monastery estates to the noble Günther and received properties in return, including in Schmeheim.
Today, the village has 266 inhabitants. The municipality is located on the north-western edge of the district of Hildburghausen in a basin of the Spring and is part of the "Little Thuringian Forest". The economy is dominated by agriculture.
