At the end of the Hexengrund, where the Wiedbach rises, lies the small village of Schmieden (370 m above sea level, 53 inhabitants), first mentioned in a document in 1083 as "Smiden". The village name goes back to a former smithy.

Embedded in gentle meadows and the forests of the Hummelberg to the south and the Schmiedener Berg to the north, far away from major traffic routes, the village conveys an air of grace and tranquillity. Via the Schmiedener Berg and the "Hohe Straße" you reach the "Spaal" deserted settlement, which was still the highest settlement in the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg at the end of the 19th century.

The "Spaal", with the Spaalhaus built in the 19th century as accommodation for forest workers, is part of the Schmiedener Flur and is a popular hiking area.

There is also an old stone cross on the venerable avenue of lime trees that leads to the Spaalhaus and the legendary wolf's cross somewhat secluded in the forest. The Pentecost services on the "Spaal" have become a tradition.
