Sömmerda is located in the middle of the rural district of Sömmerda. First mentioned in a document in 876, interested visitors can still find evidence of Sömmerda's eventful history today, such as the remains of the town wall and associated fortified towers. The small farming town gained significant importance during the industrial revolution. The Dreyse Museum provides information about the development of today's industrial location, which was significantly influenced by Nicolaus von Dreyse with the invention of the needle gun.
