Sunday fountain in Lauterbach

The Sunday fountain in Lauterbach is without doubt the landmark of Lauterbach. The source of the Sonntagsbrunnen, or Sunday fountain, comes from the “Kaiserberg” behind the Harsberg and runs all the way to Lauterbach.

The name has been handed down from 1635, when the plague raged particularly strongly in the village. According to tradition, the people of Lauterbach met at this place on Sundays to see who was still alive.

The Sunday well never ran dry, even in times of extreme drought. We can read in the chronicle: „The year 1874 was a very dry summer. There was neither rain nor thunderstorms. Due to many dried-up springs, there was a partial water shortage.“ However, this water shortage was limited by the Sunday well in the village.

Or: “In the summer of 1904 there was a persistent drought, which also caused a water shortage in Lauterbach, apart from the extremely strong jet from the Sunday fountain.”
