St. Andrew's Church
St. Andrew's Church
A special feature of the church dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle on the village green is the position of the nave in relation to the tower. In most churches, it is common for the church tower to form the western end of the building and the nave to be located on the eastern side.
But not so in Kammerforst on the northern edge of the Hainich. The nave, which was originally really on the east side, was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. In 1687, the parish rebuilt the part of the building, but on the west side. The ceiling barrel displays numerous baroque paintings and depictions of apostles, which go back to the Kammerforst painter Adolf Rettelbusch. There is an erratic boulder in front of the church as a memorial to him. The patron saints' boxes bear the coats of arms of the church patrons of Seebach and Eschwege.
