St. George's Church

The stately, late Gothic church with an asymmetrical floor plan in the center of the town, built between 1497 and 1520, burial place of the Mansfeld counts, impresses with its rich interior decoration. Martin Luther spent his childhood in St. George's Church; he started school in 1488 and his voice could be heard in the choir of the church as a boy.

The impression of the hall-like, high, flat-roofed interior is defined by the wooden horseshoe gallery; the balustrades are filled with 49 panels with painted scenes from the New Testament. There are three late Gothic altars in the choir, two of which were donated by Martin Luther's father, Hans Luder, a wealthy master smelter and tetrarch of the town of Mansfeld. Four lords were usually elected annually and dealt with minor offenses and parts of the administration of a town. In 1524, the Reformation was introduced in the church and on St. Martin's Day in 1562, the veneration of Martin Luther as a person began to take shape - as can be seen in the full-length portrait from Cranach's workshop.

Lucas Cranach the Younger is also represented with a painting in St. George's Church: "The Resurrection of Christ" dates from 1545. The organ was built by Furtwängler in 1929/30.
