Today's spa town of Bad Tabarz, picturesquely situated at the foot of the Inselsbergs was originally four villages, which have now grown together to form a political and ecclesiastical unit - Cabarz, Großtabarz, Kleintabarz and Nonnenberg.

Großtabarz grew rapidly in the 19th century due to the up-and-coming spa business, so that in 1914 a separate church for the village of Großtabarz was completed and consecrated.

This makes St. Peter and Paul Church the youngest church in the Waltershausen-Ohrdruf church district. Until 1914, the church in Cabarz was the religious center of the village, which was consecrated in its current form in 1673. In these two churches and in the parish hall at Walther-Rathenau-Straße 12, the second largest parish in the church district meets for lively and spiritual fellowship.

Two full-time employees are currently responsible for preaching, teaching and pastoral care: Pastor Kai-Philipp Kunze and church educator Gabriele Tuma. In addition, there are many volunteers and a church council of 8 elders who contribute to the diversity of our church.
