The Protestant parish church of St. Trinitatis on the high plateau in the southwest of the old town dominates the silhouette of the city from afar. The church was built on the remains of a Romanesque basilica in 1418 and dedicated to the English Benedictine monk who carried out intensive missionary work in Thuringia and Hesse. During this time, the building was known as St. Wigbertus Church. In 1652, the three-nave nave and the two square towers burned down, while the single-nave chancel with its cross vault was spared from the flames. Here you can see the plaque with the year 1418 - the year the church was built. After the reconstruction and completion of the repair work, the church was given its current name "St. Trinitatis", known locally as the Trinitatis Church. In this year, the church also received the pulpit with the 12 apostles. The pulpit is supported by a carved wooden figure of Moses.

The small north tower with the pointed helmet houses the so-called "evening bell" in the upper part. It once adorned the church of the former village of Wenigentennstedt. The south tower, which rises higher, takes on a baroque form towards the top. It contains 2 bells. The larger festive bell was cast by Jacob König from Erfurt in 1641 and originally hung in the bell tower of the cemetery church. The smaller Sunday bell from 1638 comes from Sondershausen.

As you walk around the church, you can see an almost life-size sculpture carved in sandstone from the first half of the 15th century in the niche on the choir side. It depicts Christ with three sleeping disciples on the Mount of Olives.

A large stone porch leads into the church from the town side. The interior of the church dates mainly from the 17th century. The baroque council stalls with their richly carved and painted decorations and the painted balustrade of the organ loft are remarkable. The baptismal font from 1682 is also richly decorated with allegorical biblical figures. Several inscribed gravestones of important citizens of the town and other historical relics can also be seen in the interior of the church.

From the 45 m high south tower of the church, you have a wonderful view over Bad Tennstedt and the surrounding Thuringian countryside.
