The church in Oberpreilipp is one of the oldest in the area. It was built in 1090 in Byzantine style and is dedicated to St. Vitus. In later times, the Preilipp church developed into a popular place of pilgrimage. The legend that St. Anthony died here on his missionary journey to the Sorbs and is said to be buried under the „Holy Hill“ may also have contributed to the importance of the church. Due to its age and architectural style, St. Vitus Church would have been an important cultural monument. Unfortunately, the value of the building was not recognized. The church was partially demolished in 1862. The tower was preserved. Valuable carved altars and the late Romanesque holy water font can be admired today in the Saalfeld town museum.
