Greiz State Book and Engraving Collection with Satiricum
Historical and contemporary caricatures and mezzotints at the Sommerpalais Greiz
The Greiz State Book and Engraving Collection was established in 1922 as a foundation of the elder line of the House of Reuss. The most important part of the collection, the mezzotints partly after portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds, comes from the estate of the English Princess Elizabeth (1770-1840). The collection also focuses on historical caricatures from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Based on this collection, the "SATIRICUM" was founded in Greiz in 1975. Biennials of caricature from the GDR have been held every two years since 1978 and have been continued in the German Triennial of Caricature since 1994. With 10,000 sheets, the Sommerpalais has the most extensive collection of GDR caricatures.
